Welcome to the Department of French Language and Literature of the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University.
The Department of French Language and Literature started its own educational and research activities in 1992. Until then, it was integral to the Department of Western Languages of the Faculty of Education which was re-established in 1990 with the aim of educating future teachers of English, German and French languages. The principal scholar who made the greatest effort to re-establish the Western Languages Studies and who played a decisive role in the founding process of the current Department of French Language and Literature was doc. PhDr. Naděžda Krsková, CSc.
The primary mission of the Department is to educate future lower-secondary school teachers of French language. Our education is a multidisciplinary one, combining various subjects and the Didactics of French as a Foreign Language. The proposed subjects aim at improving students' language skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking), as well as studying and learning about French and Francophone literature and culture. One of our main goals is to motivate students towards open-mindedness, critical thinking, and creativity.
Other activities include the promotion of French language and its importance on the Czech work market. Our Department is part of a working group which tries to search and create this promotion. The group assembles the faculties of education in the Czech Republic and their didacticians of French, the association Gallica, Czech association of French teachers SUF, IFP (French institute in Prague), Alliance française, and Franco-Czech Chamber of Commerce. One of the results of this cooperation is the project "Map of French Language".
